The Past Few Weeks...

Hey all..Have been on holidays for quite some time now. But I spent most of it being sick. Have been vomiting and had a bad case of flu for 2 weeks. had to get an injection and some horrid medicine. Sad hols.

Before coming home, I spent 3 days at CF Camp which was super fun! The sessions were really good. Pastor Yesudason made quite an impact on me. He spoke a lot about God’s will in our lives. I found it really interesting cos I’ll be out in the world soon and what he said was relevant to what I’m going through. Made me think a lot about my life. Guess I’ve got a whole lot more to think about cos it’s really not easy determining how you wanna live your life, what legacy do you wanna leave and all. The worship sessions were really great especially the ones conducted by the BM Dept.

Before the camp, Joyce, Siew Hwei, Jesslyn, Amanda and I were staying together for 3 days in Joyce’s room. Now that was super duper fun! We did lots of stuff together. But the best memory of those few days is when we did our own steamboat in the room. The boys (Luke, James, Richie) were really jealous...haha. Sorry guys...we really wanted a girls’ night!! We did our shopping in Changlun at the market and at C-Mart. Gosh…we went a little crazy. We bought a lot of food and that night we had to stuff ourselves like crazy and we even had leftovers to give James and Aaron!

Also I found out that my favourite boyband in the world has decided to come out with a new album! Yup the Backstreet Boys are back again…yay!! Their first single, Inconsolable from their new album Unbreakable makes a good listen. Really. but my favourite song would be Helpless When She Smiles. Yes, it's a sappy ballad but what can I say? I'm a sucker when it comes to BSB's ballads! Even though the boys are not actually boys anymore and they look a bit weird in this video, they still remain No.1 to me..sigh. After all these years they're still going strong (unlike other boybands, namely NSYNC and whatever groups not worth mentioning). Gotta give them credit for that. GO BSB!!

Of books and all..

As many of you know, one of my favourite things to do in the world is read. Yup, Elizabeth is actually a big nerd. I know it’s a bit hard to detect the ‘nerdiness’ in me but yes folks, it’s really there ;).

Once I start reading a book, it will take a bulldozer to yank my attention away from them. In my family, my dad & I are the readers. The rest, well they aren’t. so they just don’t understand my ‘relationship’ with books..haha. My mum, in particular gets pretty upset when I forget about lunch and housework once I get a book in my hands. Most of the time her pleas go ignored. Thus she has since given up on me. Now she just sighs loudly and says something like ‘that girl & her books again’. Haha..funny mum.

My all-time favourite authors would be Enid Blyton. Her Famous Five and Five-Find-Outers series were my absolute favourites. I actually still read them once in a while. Don’t laugh ya..I mean I’ve probably read it around 100 times easily (ok..maybe not 100 times, but you get the picture :) ). Can never get bored of it!

Then as I grew up, my tastes expanded. Started reading Sweet Valley series, which was really popular at that time. Everyone in school was reading it and it became quite a phenomenon. Somehow it is not as popular today as it was last time..hmmm.dunno why.

Sweet Valley got me interested in romance novels, namely Mills & Boon and the like. These books were quite interesting to read at first but after a while I thought that all the storylines were about the same even though the books were written by different people. The plots may vary but basically the story’s the same. Bad boy meets nice girl. At first they’d hate each other but after some tongue-lashing between them, the girl ends up falling in love with the guy. Typical.

After entering into uni, my taste in books changed significantly. My dad started introducing me to biographies. He always loved that sort of book but I always perceived it as too boring. But I thought I might humor him when he got me this book- Do They Hear You When You Cry? by Fauziyah Kassindja. Had some misgivings when I saw how thick the book was..But boy..what a book! Totally had me hooked from the time I started reading it. This is the story of Fauziyah herself. Her journey from Togo, Africa to America. Her sad tragedies and miseries all the way from her homeland. What she wrote was shocking to read. Had me reduced to tears by the time I finished. I never imagined that people actually go through these things nowadays. A really good read if you can take the sad and sometimes gory details described quite vividly by the writer.

That got me started on biographies particularly the ones that portray the struggles and oppression faced by people (especially women) in other countries that we don’t normally hear about. Princess by Jean P. Sasson was also very eye-opening. It describes the life of Princess Sultana Al Sa'ud, a princess in the royal house of Saudi Arabia. Hidden behind her black veil, she is a prisoner, jailed by her father, her husband, and her country.

Sultana reveals the appalling oppressions, everyday occurrences that in any other culture would be seen as shocking human rights violations. Daughters of Arabia is the sequel to this book. A superb read.

When I saw Not Without My Daughter by Betty Mahmoody in the library, an instinct told me to pick it up and read it. Wow..the book was so super good! Betty Mahmoody tells her story of how her Iranian husband forcefully kept her and their daughter in his home country and all the suffering and torture she went through trying to free herself and the daughter from him and his family and the story of her eventual escape from Iran. Really touching story.

I started reading Mary Higgins Clark’s books last semester and I was instantly addicted. Not only does her characters totally come alive in my imagination but also she keeps my thrill flowing through every single page. The murderer is never revealed until the last page possible second (unlike Sidney Sheldon’s books) and this keeps readers very interested and on-the-edge in their desperation to know who did it. My heart actually beats real fast when I read her books. Wow..never before have I been so into an author. Mary Higgins Clark is really one magnificent writer. Hey all..seriously next time if you’re thinking about what book to read next, I’d recommend u pick up any title from her. It’ll blow you socks off!!

Hey all..it’s been a long, long time since I posted anything here. 13 months, to be exact. So because of the fine persuasive skills of my dearest buds (mostly, Chun Yee & Huey Wen), I’ve decided to revive my blog.

First things first..in my last post, I mentioned my uncle was going to work in Afghanistan. Well he didn’t in the end. Thanks to my mum..haha. She made a big fuss and demanded my uncle change his mind. So that’s it then.

Well..the drum lessons haven’t been going so well. I’m sticking to the basic knowledge of how to play it. Anything beyond that means I have to go for a surgical operation to disconnect the nerves that connects my hands and legs since I have absolutely no way of making my hands & legs move at different beats. But obviously that would kill me so that it then.

Now for a few updates..still studying in UUM. Next semester will be my last..woohoo! Can’t believe it though. Seems time has a way of just whizzing past me without warning. Going out into the real world soon. Scary but it’s a part of life that we all must go through.

Oh yes..I’m taking Spanish this sem. It’s been fun so far. Those long-ago times of watching Spanish soap operas are paying off. Can easily understand the words. Spanish verbs are difficult though. But somehow I’m coping well in this class. Had a presentation the other day. Our group did a short skit. We were so scared cos it is after all a foreign language but it turned out ok. Not great but ok. It did bring back memories of my acting days way back in Standard 5. Sigh..those were good times.

Have been missing my friends a lot lately especially Chin, Huey, Jo-Ann, Choo & Ee May. It’s been ages since I last saw Chin. Met Jo & Choo in KL about a month back. What fun it was seeing them even if it was only for a few hours. Managed to gossip like crazy. Miss you guys!!

If u guys have been checking out my friendster profile, you would know that I have a baby cousin who is now 4 months old. Her name is Neha and she’s the cutest thing ever! Chubby and expressive, she’s pee-ed on me more times than I care to remember. Because of her, I’ve learnt to change nappies, the correct way to bathe babies and other ‘mummy’ lessons..haha.

Also have been missing my cousin, Shireen. Had loads of fun in KL with her. We shopped like mad. Haha..can only go mad like this with her. She can totally entice me to spend money in shoes and clothes! My mum’s always worried when the both of us are together..funny mum. We even went to watch the fireworks in Putrajaya then it was satay kajang..oooh it was so super good! Those times are still fresh in my head..love u!

Chin called me the other day. She had an extra ticket to Chris Daughtry’s concert in Singapore this Thursday. She asked me to join her. Was so excited! But a horrible thought then came to my head..is my passport still valid? A quick calculation told me the horrid truth. Yep..it had indeed expired. Still not very convinced, I quickly called my mum to ask her. She confirmed that it has been 5 years since our last trip overseas. What a total let down!! Badly wanted to go for that. Chris is so super hot..plus I have a thing for bald guys (think Lex Luthor in Smallville)..hehe. Only if they look good with it, of course. So now Chin’s taking Wan Yean to the concert. Sigh..sad sad sad.

These are some of the pics of the things I’ve been up to lately. Just so you’re all up-to-date about my life..adios for now

Bits & Pieces...

Sorry for not keeping my blog up to date...have been so super-busy with my 101 assignments…It’s been crazy! All my online ventures have been really short…long enough to retrieve the notes my lecturers put online. That only takes about 15 minutes tops…sorry again.

Well nothing really exciting has happened since I last checked in here. Life has been really boring. Oh ya…my sister went for an appendicitis operation a few days back. She’s fine now, just has to rest a lot.

Right now, I’m learning how to play the drums. We had a jamming session at the church in Changlun the other day and boy, was it fun or what!! It has been one of my deepest desire (along with climbing the Everest and visiting the Pyramids) to learn how to play the drums and be really good at it. My little brother, who’s so good at drums absolutely refused to teach me. One of my juniors, Luke volunteered for the job…God bless him! Never thought I was so uncoordinated until I actually played the drums. How on earth do I get both my hands and my right leg to play at different times? They seem to have a mind of their own when I’m on the drums. Just couldn’t seem to control them…sigh.

Took me a long time but I’ve finally done it…thanks to the long practices in my room using my highlighter pens as drum sticks. My aim is to go back and give my too-cool-for-my-sister brother a shock of his life when he sees that I actually know how to play…hehe.

One disappointing thing that happened was the class trip to Thailand got cancelled because of the bird flu...really sad. Especially since I was so excited about it and also because I kinda like boasted about this trip to everyone else…sigh. Now I’ve got nothing to show off…what a sad, sad life.

I’ve officially certified certain family members of mine (namely, my uncle-my mom’s younger brother) absolutely crazy. This uncle of mine has got it into his head to go overseas to work. Where, you ask? Well if it were Singapore or Japan or England, I wouldn’t call him crazy. But do you know where he’s going? AFHGANISTAN…there, I’ve said it. It’s a crazily crazy idea, if you ask me. Of all the places to go to…for once in my life, I’m just left speechless (that doesn’t happen often, believe me). There must be over 100 countries in the world and he had to choose that one. Why, you ask? I, with all my creative ideas and superb logical thinking, can’t, for the life of me, think of a single reason why he’d go there…I’m actually still in shock. HELP!!!

What is going on???

Have been really pissed off with the newspaper as of late. I mean, look at the headlines of The Star 2 days ago. Instead of highlighting other more important such as the tsunami in Indonesia which killed hundreds of people or the war in the Middle East, they chose to talk about Siti Nurhaliza getting married! I mean, come on!! 3 full pages about them!!

Ok, well maybe it is actually important or news-worthy but it is definitely not worthy of front-page news. And the way they’ve been talking about her and Datuk K for months now is seriously degrading to the image of the newspaper. I feel like it’s becoming more like a tabloid now instead of a respected newspaper. If we actually wanted to know about Siti and the guy she’s marrying, we’d buy one of those glossy magazines which feature these kind of things to its finest detail. PLEASE, we want the old Star back. We want to read NEWS not gossips and celebrity marriages. Thanks.

Here I am back again after 5 days in UUM. Moved into a new room, am roommate-less & loving it!!

These few days have been hectic for me as I've got to add/drop subjects and believe me, this is no easy task...sigh...my brains felt like they were gonna explode yesterday when Aruna & I went all over the Communications & Modern Languages Faculty trying to add a couple of subjects which were already fully taken. Don't know why this always happens to me..I always register my subjects early yet it is all in vain. So come every semester I have to run around begging lecturers to let me in their already full class. And as always Aruna & I end up taking a paper which we're actually supposed to take in our 5th sem..sigh (again).

Well all that's over now. Finished adding my subjects and may I say that I have a horrible time-table. Have 4 classes consecutively for 1 1/2 hours each (which makes a total of 6 hours) every Mondays and Wednesdays (God help me!). On top of that, all these classes are at exactly the same lecture hall which can be compared to the Antartica, if you know what I mean. Dear Ee May has told me to wear the complete gear-sweater, mittens, scarf, socks, gloves and goodness knows what else.REALLY!!
